Some high utility household tips

  • Keep some pieces of camphor while storing silver jewellery items. This will prevent blackening of the silver.

  • Add a vegetable salad as an important item on the menu during the lunch sessions, especially in the summer season. Avoid items deep fried in oil.

  • In case anthills are noted inside the house, insert some pinches of asafoetida inside the anthill. The problem will get removed.

  • Mix 4 tablespoons of salt in a glass and spray this in the 4 corners of the hall/room. This will prevent ants movement.

  • Tying the flower kept on top of the Kamakshi Amman oil lamp kept in the pooja room will prevent it from falling down.

  • In case the clothes get stained with oil or grease or tar, rub a few drops of Nilgiri lotion (thailam) on the stain spots and then wash. The stains will get removed.

  • In case the stainless steel vessels tend to lose their shine, rub them with the holy ash (vibhoothi) strongly once a week, The vessels will regain the shine.

  • In the case there are hole(s) in the plastic bucket, taken an old unused toothbrush and burn it – allow the molten liquid from the brush to fall exactly on the holes. They will get covered making the buckets ok again.

  • Some of the shoes may not be used that frequently. Keep a ball of rasakarpooram (a form of camphor) in each shoe. Insects won’t enter inside the shoe.

  • Empty sachets of used shampoo can be added while soaking the clothes with detergents for washing – they will add a pleasant smell to the clothes.

  • Keep the pressure cookers open when they are not used.

  • In case there is no refrigerator in the house, the idli/dosa batter will not get sour if they are kept in closed plastic containers or buckets.

  • Similarly, the vegetables can be kept covered with wet clothing. They won’t wither.

  • Spray camphor powder on items which are likely to be affected by termite.

  • It is better to drop some small pieces of camphor while keeping the silver vessels in a bureau.

  • In order to remove the bad smell from the vessels after cooking non-vegetarian items, rub these vessels with some tamarind - after a few minutes, wash them as usual with the washing powder.

  • Keep ginger covered with a wet cloth on top of the water pots/vessels – it will remain fresh up to 10 days.

  • When dry rinds of lemon or orange are kept on the shelves or almirahs, insects will not enter.

  • Get some snuff powder – mix with some water – spray over the anthills – they will disappear.

  • Fry some chopped cashew nuts in ghee and add it on top of the vegetable soup when giving it to children – they will relish it.
