Last Sunday morning was quite unusual for Salem people as they face a mild earth quake scaling the 3.3 Richter scale of reading. No damages to lives or buildings were reported as of now owing to the nature’s compassion this time.
Omalur, Kadayampatti and Tharamangalam are the primary areas of Salem where the earth quake was felt in the Sunday morning 7.45 A.M. People rushed to the streets after they felt the earth’s vibrating shake all over these localities.
Reports from the Indian Meteorological Department released the coordinates of the earth quake as follows:
“Earthquake of Magnitude: 3.3, Time and Date: 22-07-2018, 07:47:31 IST, Latitude: 11.6 N & Longitude: 78.1 E, Depth: 15 Km, Region: Salem District, Tamil Nadu”
There were several rumors among public regarding the causes of the earth quake. One of the main rumor is the belief that the water level in Mettur dam causing the earth quake. Tamil Nadu Weather Man, one of the climate and natural calamities expert reported on Facebook that the earth quake of Salem cannot be connected with the dam’s quantity overflow. Several times in the past the dam marked the maximum quantity point and so the tremors of the region can only be attributed to a natural occurrence.
