Recently there was an accident at St Thomas Mount railway station and few youngsters lost their lives. A two day public hearing took place and on Tuesday, 31st July 2018, the railway commissioner completed the public hearing. The southern railway has now taken decision to increase the EMU services between Chengalpatu-Chennai Beach section. It must be noted that about 50 persons that included railway employees from signalling and communication sections, permanent way, operational and commercial sections and RPF deposed before southern circle railway safety commissioner, Mr. K.A. Manoharan. In the meeting with the safety commissioner at the Chennai divisional office, the officials agreed to increase the frequency of trains so that the public would be benefited.

According to a senior railway official, few more suburban train services would soon making their presence felt in the section between Chennai Beach and Chengalpattu. The gap between the two trains would be reduced to less than eight minutes. He also spoke about how the date on which this increase in the frequency of trains would begin was not yet finalized. The news is southern railways would not run EMU services on the fast lines temporarily.

Fast lines are suitable for the operation of Express train coaches (conventional ICF and LHB rakes), mainline electrical multiple units or MEMU plus diesel electrical multiple units or DEMU. The sources were of the view that fast EMU services would not be started immediately. The sources hinted that rush hour cut services were planned.

It is known that a concrete fence is present at the platform No 3 and No 4 at the St Thomas Mount railway station. It is now clear from the sources that no immediate action has been taken to remove this concrete fence present at this station. Measurement of safety parameters in the Chennai-Arakkonam suburban station by the Chennai railway division has started.
