Flood protection in Adyar and Cooum basins

Chennai Corporation executed the flood protection plan along the banks of Cooum and Adyar. As the monsoon rains are nearing the east coastal part of the state Chennai Corporation planned to raise necessary measures to avoid flooding in the important areas of the city keeping the devastating flood effect in the year 2015. The project was named as Integrated Storm Water Drain (ISWD) executed with the funds provided by World Bank.

One of the senior officials of the Corporation said the initial construction of the draining system had been constructed around 400 km at a cost of Rs 1250 Crore. The areas covered by ISWD system are Ambattur, Alandur and Valasaravakkam zones with all protective measures for avoiding water retention.

Further the project has been carried out in the areas of Nerkundram, Virugambakkam, Alwarthirunagar and Maduravoyal. In the December floods of 2015, the division 148 almost submerged into the sweeping flood causing many destructive effects in the locality. So the draining system construction on the Adyar-Cooum basins will protect more than seven lakh people residing in the respective areas of the city.
