Today, Saturday, Aadi Amavasai day, 11th August, is a very sacred day in the Hindu Almanack (Panchangam) - the day of New Moon in the Tamil calendar month of Aadi.
It is a tradition to perform obeisance to the departed elders of the generation and observe penance and pray. This will lead to some positive effects in life such as removal of blocks in the marriage proposal, cure of prolonged illness, and relief from severe mental anxiety/tension and will bring mental peace and prosperity in life.
Th holy occasion of ‘Aadi Amavasai’ is the day on which the Sun and the Moon are in the same Zodiac symbol.
Traditionally, the New Moon Days (Amavasai in Tamil) occurring during the ‘Utharayana’ holy period (during the Tamil calendar month of Thai) and the ‘dakshinayana’ holy period (during the Tamil calendar month of Aadi) are considered very holy.
It is a good tradition to observe obeisance to the departed elders including the parents on these days. Failure to observe obeisance to the departed elders including the parents on these occasions is considered as a severe sin.
The ancestors of our elder generation including mother, father, and grandparents are called in the Hindu religious system as ‘pithrus’. After their deaths, they go to a place known as ‘Pithru lokam’.As per the classical epics, pithru lokam is located at several lakh miles away from the sun.
Failure to take proper affectionate care of the ancestors including the parents will lead to their immense suffering which will result in sin on our end as per the astrological literature of the old times. This sin is known as ‘pithru dhosham’.
In order to get relief from ‘pithru dhosham’, and to appease the souls of the suffered and departed ancestors, it is mandatory to observe obeisance and perform penance. This will appease the souls of the ancestors and they will give their blessings to us. They will also help our lives and remove all the hardships encountered.
