The long delayed plan to install solar panels in Corporation buildings for reducing the overall energy requirements from non-renewable sources has finally approved by the state government. Now the Greater Chennai Corporation buildings falls into energy saving zones with the help of solar panels atop buildings.

Earlier plans devised the solar roof panel installation for 1000 buildings. Now as an initial phase 662 corporation owned buildings such as schools, dispensaries, public halls, primary health center and offices are likely to operate from solar energy through rooftop panels.

The total power capacity installed through panels in these buildings will be around 3.06MW that will largely impact the electricity cost reduction. Chennai Corporation expects a saving of Rs 72,000 approximately with the installation of solar roof tops.

After the approval of the state the order for commencement of the installation has been done by the corporation authorities.  The total cost of the work is Rs 22 crore and almost all the offices of Chennai Corporation are planned to cover with the solar panel installations. Owning to the historical heritage and importance Rippon building is opted out for the solar panel installation.

Tamil Nadu government had a target to achieve 3000MW of power capacity through solar panels by 2015 which is not achieve up to date. In 2017 S P Velumani, Municipal administration minister announced the plan to install solar panels in the municipal and corporation buildings of Chennai. Self-depending energy sources that are renewable can bring a big reduction in the electricity costs and power can be saved diverted for other important applications.
