It is known that the first ever online counselling for the engineering courses went off well. The news that has come out now is more than 75 % of the students got allotment within their 3 choices.

In this year the engineering admissions were different from the previous years because online engineering counselling was introduced in this year. This was mainly done for the benefit of the students and their parents to avoid unnecessary travel.

Secretary, Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions, Mr. Rhymend Uthariaraj, expressed his thoughts. He spoke about how this system was new and how this system was utilized to accommodate both rural as well as urban students. As many as 72,648 seats have been filled by TNEA and as many as 97,890 seats have been vacant and this was after 5 rounds. He later spoke about how the students have surprised the officials in the online counselling by exercising better choices. He highlighted that more than 75% of students got their allotment within their first 3 choices. It is worthy to note that over 50 % candidates got their first choice in the counselling for engineering admissions.

One important piece of information is TFCs or TNEA Facilitation Centres have not been used that much and it is clear that only 25 % of the students used these centres at the time of online counselling. To help the students and their parents in the engineering admissions, TNEA had set up as many as 42 facilitation centres in TN. There are many vacant seats in both government as well as government aided colleges after the counselling. To fill these vacant seats, the students and teachers have demanded second and third phase counselling. By this there would not be any wastage of seats in the university and in the government engineering colleges.

It is brought out that TNEA would consider organising second phase counselling after consulting with the government from the next academic year. This was confirmed by Mr. Rhymend Uthariaraj.

According to Mr. Kishore, vice-chairman, RMK Engineering College, the top 19 engineering colleges were able to fill more than 90% of their intake. Feedback from alumni was used by the students in selecting the colleges. He later spoke highly about Anna University and higher education department that were responsible for the smooth conduction of the first ever online counselling for the engineering admissions. Many engineering colleges having good facilities were not able to fill up their seats during online counselling. Mr. Kishore later expressed his thoughts regarding the engineering syllabus and said time has come to upgrade the engineering syllabus so that the quality is maintained. To train the engineering students, more autonomy must be given to the engineering colleges and tie-ups with the nearby industries are important.

It must be noted that a trustee of engineering college near Chennai urged Anna University to conduct engineering counselling along with arts and science courses adadmissions. Advancement in the engineering counselling would be highly beneficial and it would boost the engineering admissions. It is now said that the decline in the engineering admissions is due to quality plus also due to the students getting admitted to many arts and science courses before the commencement of engineering counselling.

Former vice-chancellor of Anna University, Mr. Ananthakrishnan threw light on the fact that the colleges that do not have any takers were of low quality and lack qualified teachers and laboratory facilities.
