The greenhouse gas emissions from the buses create many issues for the public. By electrifying the buses the greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced. It is now said that a four member team belonging C40 City Finance facility or CFF visited the Adyar bus depot during their 4 day visit to Chennai city. This CFF is a global networking group whose main objective is to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions by electrifying buses.
As per an official press release, a report was prepared by the CFF team regarding the operation of electrified buses or e-buses in Chennai city and this report was submitted to the state transport minister Mr. Vijayabhaskar.
There were many discussions and these discussions that took place between the head of the CFF or C40 and various government departments about the routes along which these e-buses could be operated. Many important details about setting up of transformers, charging points and the infrastructure were also discussed in the above said meeting. There were also some talks about the issues faced by the foreign nations which implemented the project using C40 funds.
Comparing diesel run buses with e-buses, Mr. Vijayabhaskar said that the cost of purchasing e-buses were high. He later spoke about the operational cost of e-buses and said they were low. It is interesting to note that a fully charged battery could make the bus run for 240km in a stretch and it could carry as many as 54 passengers. The capacity of e-buses reduces when there are more passengers in it.
The state transport minister later threw light on how a batch of 500 new diesel buses would be making their presence felt on the Chennai roads. He also hinted that efforts are going on to introduce as many as 4000 more buses. It is important to mention that this was earlier announced in the assembly.
