Chromepet in south Chennai is a very important residential locality and the MIT flyover here is now making news. Recently an order was issued by the city police commissioner, Mr. A.K. Viswanathan, to install CCTV cameras here. The news is as many as four CCTV cameras are now fixed on the popular MIT flyover in Chromepet.
According to a police officer from Chromepet police station, there are many accidents taking place during the night time and these accidents are difficult to track on this stretch. The presence of cameras would be of huge help. The police officer later hinted that more such tracking and surveillance devices would soon be making their presence felt in other accident prone places also.
There would be digital video recorders or DVR and the cameras would be attached to these DVR and would function around the clock. There would be an officer for monitoring the recorded footage from DVR. It is said that DVR could be tracked directly from the Chromepet police station.
To make sure the children’s are safe and also to ensure smooth flow of traffic, four CCTV cameras along with DVR’s would also be installed at Mappedu which is a school zone. This CCTV installation has made the people belonging to Chromepet and Pallavaram very happy now.
Mr. V. Santhanam, Federation of Civic and Welfare Association of Pallavaram and Chromepet, expressed his views and spoke about the importance of these CCTV cameras along with DVR’s. He spoke about how this move was made after consultation with welfare associations and how the road accidents would be tended to sooner. The installation of CCTV cameras plus DVRs is expensive but it is of great worth. It is important to mention that just few weeks back as many as 150 surveillance systems were installed along the main roads from Thiruneermalai to Tambaram in association with shop owners.
