The Portuguese found the Roman Catholic Cathedral back in 1523. It is very close to the beach. The British constructed the it again in non-Gothic style in the year 1896. This place is believed to be the final place where St Thomas rested (he is an Apostle). There is popular belief that Doubting Thomas had introduced Christianity in India during AD 52. St Thomas was killed at Chennai in AD 72. At the back of Cathedral, there is a tomb of St Thomas.
In spite of the many mortals of St Thomas’ remaining in Italy, there is a bone fragment on the tomb indicating the Relic of St Thomas. There is a museum above where there are artefacts about Thomas.
The St Thomas Pole present in the end of cathedral’s southern side is said to have helped during tsunami in 2004 by saving cathedral.
