Line of Wind-discontinuity (LWD) and Heat to provide Thunderstorms from 9th September for the next 15 days with North and Interior Tamil Nadu in the hot spot. Chennai too will get its share
============================
We have seen a dry September till date. September is the month when wind reversal starts in the north and its also the month which sees Intense Thunderstorms. Chennai has seen three hailstorms in September.

September 12th 2013
September 6th 2011
September 27th 2007

The most intense rains spell in an hour in Chennai also happened on September 11, 1996. I still remember that intense downpour as a school kid. Seri intha kathalam irukattum.....coming spell pathi pesalam.

LWD
------------
As you can see the wind barbs in pinji pona jilabi mathri, thats called wind discontinuity. With monsoon going on break mode in most of India except in Assam - Sikkim - Dooars in West Bengal, Bihar and some north eastern states. Most of the time it results in rains down south in Tamil Nadu in the non monsoon areas. Next 15 days is going to be very active in Tamil Nadu.

How it will rain ?
----------------------
Heat is essential for everything. So the rains will start in the interiors first by noon or evening and as night sets in the rains will move towards the coastal belt depending on the steering winds. But Interiors will benefit more in terms of quantum of rainfall. Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Vellore, Thiruvannamalai which got semma rains last year during the last year however this year has performed badly will benefit most. Other areas will get rains too. KTC (Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chennai) belt too will get rains. As i said earlier, Chennai will mostly get rains in night / late nights. Next 10-15 days is going to be very good for Tamil Nadu all those district which has seen deficient rainfall will move into normal or excess category by end of this month. Bangalore too will get its share of thunderstorms from the coming spell.

Coonoor in Nilgiris, Kodaikanal and Dindigul regions, Mettupalayam areas in Coimbatore which are non SW monsoon areas will get rains too. Balan Balan u were asking about rains in Dindigul, this will be ur time to get rains.

In particular, 10, 11 and 12th September will see very good and widespread Thunderstorms. Exciting days are ahead in the form of Thunderstorms and much needed rains in the non monsoon areas. Further, as i said September storms are intense....So one need to be careful when in open ground / ponds mostly in rural areas to avoid being struct from Lightening.

Floods ? - No need to worry about floods or anything. Though some spots will get heavy rains, this will not result in floods. So dont worry about rumors.

20 things one should know, when they are caught in Thunderstorms accompanied with gusts, high intensity rains and Lightning
-----------------------------
The list is compiled by me from various sources and was put up in my page for awareness last year and again this year it has been appended to this post for awareness.

1. Lightning strikes the tallest object mostly a tree (if u take an village or town or forest). The strike travels between inner papart of the tree and the bark. But wood is never a good conductor of electricity, so while on the way down if it encounters a person standing next to the trunk and remember we are a better conductor than a tree, so the lightning finds that a combination of the two (tree and human) and connects to the top of the person and travels to the ground possibly killing both the tree and the person. So never hide under a tree to use it as a shade during the Thunderstorm accompanied with Lightning. But if you have no other way, remember to select the smallest tree which you can see and take shelter under it.

2. Often you seen high winds (gusts) sometimes reaching 60-70 km/hr before start of rains during a Thunderstorm. So better avoid standing under a tree or parking your car under a tree. They can be uprooted anytime.

3. Best place to be when a Lightning happens is to be locked inside ur house. However, always remember lightning can enter a building through wires, so stay away from the Landline phone and also unplug ur TV and others as surge can affect the electrical instruments.

4. During a Thunderstorm, the Lightning can enter a building through plumbing pipes too, so avoiding taking shower or washing dishes during a thunderstorm accompanied with lightning.

5. Do not lie on concrete floors, and do not lean against concrete walls as you all know all concrete has a rods which can conduct electricity.

6. At the first hint of thunder and lightning, unplug the socket and make sure the television / other electrical instruments are switched off. If you are too late and lightning has started then do not touch any electrical outlets during a storm. Do not unplug any devices during a lightning storm, as the strike could be transferred to you.

7. Never take a boat or do fishing or swimming in a lake when there is lightning. There Good chance of you being hit by a lightning .

8. Never play in open field in school or in a village or in a Football playground or Criket ground. Remember, you become the tallest object there and might be an ideal candidate of getting hit by lightning.

9. Trying to calm down your pets, even the calmest dog or cat can be transformed into a wild thing once the thunder and lightning begins. Just make sure they are safe indoors.

10. Its a myth that people say avoid being inside a car during Lightning. The truth is the metal of a car surrounds you and when a car gets struck electricity stored in the metal of the car tries many ways of finding an escape path. Make sure all windows are rolled up and doors are closed. Be careful not to lean against any metal -- if you do, the lightning will be conducted into your body if it strikes the car. Do not use the radio inside the car.

11. Beach is more dangerous as lightning travel out of its way to strike the waterline where land and water meet and it is quite common that it strikes the beach. So don`t stand on a beach during a thunderstorm.

12. If you are camping in a Hill or mountain or peaks and if a thunderstorm with lightning is on the way, try to get to the lower ground immediately.

13. If you caught midway in a thunderstorm atleast try to stay away from objects that conduct electricity like elelectricity poles, Telephone towers, Advt boards, Power lines, Flag hoisting poles in schools etc.

14. If you`re out and about with friends when a thunderstorm hits, create a distance of about 50 to 100 feet between each person. Should the area around you get struck by lightning, this will stop it travelling between the group.

15.Stay inside at least 30 minutes after the last lightning strike. Don’t go out just because the rain has stopped. There is still a significant risk of lightning strikes from a departing storm.

16. If lightning is about to strike you or strike near you, your hair may stand on end, or you may feel a tingling in your skin. Light metal objects may vibrate, and you may hear a crackling sound or "kee kee" sound. If you detect any of these signals, Squat down with your feet together, your head tucked to your chest or between your knees, and your hands covering your ears or flat against your knees. Do not lie flat on the ground, as this gives the lightning a larger target. This is a difficult position to hold and it by no means guarantees your safety. However, by making it easier for a lightning strike to flow over your body rather than through vital organs, you may be able to sustain a smaller injury from it. Cover your ears and close your eyes to protect against nearby thunder and bright lightning flashes.

17. Wear rubber boots. They are made of a material which is a bad electrical conductor.

18. If you live in a lightning-prone area, installing a lightning rod can help protect your family and your property. Have your lightning rod professionally installed. An incorrectly installed rod can increase the chance of a lightning strike.

19. Do not put yourself in danger trying to help a lightning strike victim. Either wait until the immediate danger has passed, or move the victim to a safer location. Despite the common myth, lightning can strike the same place twice.

20. Because lightning strikes can cause cardiac arrest, aggressive resuscitation may be necessary call the ambulance immediately. Meanwhile you can start CPR immediately for people struck by lightning as they do not retain an electrical charge, so you can immediately touch them and begin treatment. Do not remove the burned clothes unless absolutely necessary. Remember 90% of lightning victims survive the encounter.
