In the cycle sharing system to be introduced shortly by the Chennai Metro Corporation, the rent for the 1st hour of taking the cycle is fixed at Rs. 5.
The corporation officials explained in this regard:
In the 1st Phase of the ‘cycle sharing scheme’, cycle sharing centres are to be set up in 3 places – Anna Nagar, Marina, and Besant Nagar. The number of cycle sharing centres will increase gradually.
So far, 440 locations have been identified in Chennai City where cycle sharing scheme centres will be set up. It is expected that 2500 cycles would be introduced by end-March next year. Before the end of June, another 2500 cycles are to be introduced in the city.
Thus there would be a total of 5000 cycles available to take.
This service can be availed through a mobile App. With this App, it is possible to lock and open the cycle.
The charges for the 1st hour of use have been fixed at Rs. 5. The next 30 minutes each after this will be charged Rs. 9 for every subsequent 30 minutes. Further, there is a facility to pay Rs. 49 and use the cycle for an entire day.
Another plan is to pay Rs. 249 per month and use the cycle for 2 hours every day. Another option is to pay Rs, 699 for 3 months and use for 2 hours every day. A GST of 18% will be additionally charged.
The cycles have the GPS facility. So, it is rather easy to locate them. This scheme is being jointly operated with the Police Department.
The joint team of Chennai Metro Corporation and Chennai Metro Police will decide on the locations of the cycle sharing scheme centres.
After the 1st hour of use which is fixed at Rs. 5, every subsequent use of each 30 minutes will be charged at Rs. 9.
