The demand for the flowers is more now on the occasion of auspicious day and Vinayakar Chathurthi and this has increased the prices of the flowers more at the popular Koyambedu Wholesale Market or KWM in Chennai.

It is important to mention here that the biggest jump in the price was seen in the jasmine flowers as the prices doubled when compared to the last week.  Also the fruit prices dropped and it affected the fruit traders. According to Mr. Mookaiah who is the secretary of the Chennai Koyambedu Flower Traders Association, the yellow chrysanthemum was sold between Rs 160 per kg to Rs 200 per kg. In the last week this type of flower was sold for Rs 100 to Rs 120.

On Wednesday, ahead of Vinayakar Chathurthi, the prices of rose flowers increased from Rs 80 to Rs 90 in the last week to Rs 160. The flowers got from Thiruvallur and Vellore is sold in this Koyambedu Wholesale Market. It is surprising that the price of Kundu malli rose to Rs 1000 compared to Rs 500. The mullai flower variety was sold at Rs 600.

The fruit traders were disappointed as the cost of the fruits dropped and as per the market sources it is clear that wood apple and sugarcane that are used during the celebrations of Vinayakar Chathurthi were sold like hotcakes. The president of Chennai Koyambedu Fruit’s Agents Association, Mr. S. Srinivasan, expressed his thoughts. He spoke about how the fruit sale this year was affected due to excess supply of fruits. There were both imported as well as Indian apples available at the market but there were no buyers for these fruits. He was unhappy that inspite of Vinayakar Chathurthi festival the fruit sales have dropped at the Koyambedu market.

According to Koyambedu Vegetable Market Association advisor, Mr. Soundararajan, the vegetable prices did not have any bearing due to this superb festival. He then explained the importance of the fuel and said the increase in the cost of the fuel have marginally increased the prices of the vegetables.
