We would have come across motorists or auto drivers etc jumping a signal at the traffic junction in the Chennai city. This is considered as a minor traffic violation. Inspite of many warnings, the motorists or auto drivers continue to do the above mentioned violation. The latest news is soon these small or minor violations would become a part of permanent record with the Tamil Nadu transport department. A history sheet would be opened for each individual who violate the traffic rules and this sheet would be maintained by the TN transport department. This would be part of the department’s crackdown of violators.

The current form of driving license would be replaced by a chip based smart card. It is important to mention that the history sheet would form the part of the data of the motorists along with the driving licences, registration certificate, renewal and vehicle transfer order etc. The chip based smart card would have all the above mentioned information in it.

Transport commissioner, Mr. C. Samayamoorthy expressed his thoughts and spoke about how smart card would be given to the fresh applicants of driving licences. He later explained about the violations of road rules by the motorists, penalties slapped on them. He spoke about how the nature of their violations would be fed into the smart cards. History sheets would be created on the violators of the traffic rules. He hinted that in a month of time smart cards would be issued by the department.

Enforcement agencies would have access to the smart cards. Tablets that could read the smart cards would be given to the authorities of the enforcement agencies. Many offences that would be entered into this smart card are overloading, transporting people in goods vehicles plus using mobile phones during driving, drunken driving jumping of red signals etc. The smart cards would also have information about the accidents caused by the motorists.
