It is known that rain water harvesting structures play an important role during the rains. The latest news is the metro water department has intensified the campaign on the rain water harvesting structures or RWHs before the onset of monsoons. This has caught the attention of many now.
Mr. R. Sivashanmugam, chief engineer (operation and maintenance) of metro water department has played his part. It is revealed that he had inspected houses and commercial establishments etc. He had also educated people on the importance of proper maintenance of RWHs.
The monsoon season is expected to start by middle of next month and maintaining of RWHs would help in reaping maximum harvest of rain water during the monsoon season. There are few advantages of proper maintenance of RWH structures and these are improvement in the groundwater table and improvement in the quality of the water. It is well known that there are many houses as well as commercial establishments in places like Royapuram and Sowcarpet in Chennai. These places like Royapuram and Sowcarpet were visited by the chief engineer and a team of area engineer and deputy area engineer. Many pamphlets explaining the methods and maintenance of rain water harvesting structures or RWHs were distributed to the residents belonging to the above mentioned areas in Chennai.
It is surprising to note that to those residents who have properly maintained RWH in their houses, the team gave rain water champion badges. The important piece of news is the respective area engineers would inspect the houses inside their jurisdiction and educate the people on the importance of rain water harvesting structures. It is worthy to note that rain water harvesting or RWH is the accumulation and storage of rainwater for reuse onsite. This RWH is one of the oldest ways of self supply of water for households.
