Northeast Monsoon is nearing, with weather conditions changing over Southern Peninsula. Tamil Nadu, which is the main beneficiary during this three-month long season, has already started recording good rains.
In fact, some hefty rains are in store for the state. According to Skymet Weather, there has been a cyclonic circulation over Sri Lanka and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal. In association to this, Tamil Nadu especially the coastal regions, are receiving moderate to heavy rainfall activity since the last few days.
In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Kanyakumari recorded 35 mm of rain, followed by Kodaikanal 31 mm, Tiruvannamalai 24 mm, Yercaud 15 mm, Thanjavur and Madhavaram 14 mm.
As the Northeast Monsoon is approaching, the winds over Tamil Nadu have also changed their direction and are currently blowing from east/southeast direction. Due to this change in wind pattern, rains are expected to further intensify more over the state.
In fact, as another system lies over the Southeast Arabian Sea and a trough is running between them. Both the systems are likely to complement each other, leading to more intensified rains over the entire state of Tamil Nadu as well as for a longer period.
Heavy rains are likely to commence over Tamil Nadu from October 4. Moreover, along with the southern and coastal parts, now the northern parts including the capital of Chennai will also receive moderate to heavy rains during the next 24 to 48 hours.
Heavy to moderate rain and thundershower with strong winds of 40-60 kmph are likely over Puducherry, Ariyalur, Coimbatore, Chennai, Cuddalore, Dharmapuri, Dindigul, Erode, Kancheepuram, Kanniyakumari, Karur, Krishnagiri, Madurai, Nagapattinam, Namakkal, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Salem, Sivaganga, Thanjavur, Theni, The Nilgiris, Thiruvallur, Thiruvarur, Thoothukkudi, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Tirupur, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Villupuram and Virudhunagar, the districts of Tamil Nadu between 03rd Oct to 05th Oct 2018.
Furthermore, another system is likely to come up in the Bay of Bengal which will lie along the Tamil Nadu Coast. This system is likely to give moderate to heavy rains between October 8 to October 10.
Northeast Monsoon spans from October to December. Although there is no specific date for the onset of this season, but weather conditions begin to change somewhere during the second week itself.
Tamil Nadu including Chennai records over 60% of its annual rainfall during this season, with November being the rainiest month.
