Whatever a pregnant mother does has direct effect on her baby. So she must be very careful in her habits. It is known that the baby carries the genetic material from its father as well as mother and this means the baby not only inherit the looks etc from them but also allergies etc. Asthma is one condition that could be due to the genetic factors. In asthma, the bronchial tubes are inflamed and this would close the airways creating great difficulties in breathing. These days there are many babies having asthma issue in them and these babies find breathing very difficult. It is important to look out for the first signs in the babies to prevent them from asthma attacks.

These signs indicate that baby has got asthma issue.

Breathing difficulties:

This is one of the most important signs that clearly indicate that baby has got asthma. The baby makes more effort to breathe. During breathing the baby is moving the stomach a lot and it must be checked.

Coughing frequently:

To clear up the airways coughing is done. More coughing shows that there is some blockage in the babies and it might be due to some swelling etc. This more coughing is a clear sign that shows that the baby is having asthma and not well.

Wheezing:

A continuous whistling sound is produced in the respiratory airways during breathing and this is known as wheezing. Babies with asthma have this wheezing issue. So we must not ignore when baby has got wheezing. Consulting the doctor is a must.

Eating difficulties:

Sometime baby find difficulty in eating or even sucking the breast milk. This is because of inadequate oxygen supply to the baby. The baby would be having asthma issue.

Being lethargic:

Sometimes baby would be lethargic without doing any activity. This could be due to asthma issue also. Baby is not getting enough oxygen and it makes the baby lethargic.

Tests that confirms asthma in the baby:

It is not easy to diagnose asthma in the babies and mostly the doctor relies on the information given by the parents.  Hence it is important to provide the doctor with lots of information about the symptoms or signs seen in the baby.

Spirometry test and methacholine challenge test are done to confirm the presence of asthma in the babies. Spirometry test is about the amount of air blown out and this amount is measured and it gives an idea regarding the obstruction of the airways in the baby and the latter is about bronchoprovocation and asthma is ruled out if the results are negative. X-ray of the chest of the baby would also be used by the doctor.

Treatment for asthma in babies:

One of the most important ways to treat asthma in babies is by using an inhaler. By using inhalers it is possible to target the airways directly and inflammation could be reduced. It is also important to know about the exact reasons that cause asthma in the babies. By keeping the babies from allergens like dust, pollen smoke etc asthma could be avoided.
