History of Tirupathi Temple Brahmotsavam

The 2nd Brahmotsavam of Lord Venkateswara at Tirupathi in is progress for this year - 2018. The incidence of celebrating 2 Brahmotsavams in a single calendar year is said to occur once in 3 years. As there are 2 Brahmotsavams in a single year, the vast crowd of devotees is likely to be somewhat lesser in each Brahmotsavam thus enabling the huge lots of devotees without too much of crushing crowds and have a Darshan of the Brahmotsavam to their hearts’ content.

The Historical Records have been found which indicate that the 1st ever Brahmotsavam at the Tirupathi Temple was celebrated in the Tamil calendar month of Purattasi in the year 614 AD. This 1st Brahmotsavam was conducted by the Pallava Queen Perundevi was also known as Samavai.  During this 1st Brhamotsavam, this Queen donated a statue of Manavala Perumal made in silver. This statue is nowadays known as ‘Yoga Srinivasa Murthy’.

Subsequently, Brahmotsavams were conducted by Vijayaganta Gopala Devudu in 1254, Yadavarayalu in 1329, Veera Pratapa Rayalu in 1429, Hariahara Rayalu in 1446, and Achudharayalu in the year 1530. Thus, the historical record reveals the Brahmotsavam was conducted until the year 1583.

The legends and folklore have it that the 1st Brahmotsavam was conducted by the Lord Brahma. It is told that the Brhamotsavam is being celebrated over 1400 years. The emperors and kings organised the Brahmotsavam as a commemoration of their victories.

The 1st Brahmotsavam of this year (2018) was conducted from 13th September to 22nd September.

The 2nd Brahmotsavam is being celebrated from today (Thursday, 11th October) for 9 days. The devotees who could not participate in the September Brahmotsvam can now participate during this October Brahmotsavam and have a Darshan of the Lord Venkateswara.
