In order to prevent fake driving licences in circulation and also to facilitate tracking of lost vehicles, the central government has decided to issue new driving licences in the form of smart cards and the same type of RC books for the vehicles throughout the country.

This new system would be implemented and will be effective from July next year.

Around 32000 individuals get driving licences every day throughout the country. About 43000 vehicles get registered. However, each state has different road traffic rules and regulations and the registration system. So, some hardships are faced in the traffic between the states.

Especially when the accidents, vehicle thefts, or vehicle abduction occurs, it is rather difficult to track the details of the other states vehicles, and the drivers including time delay. The central government has been taking initiatives to tackle this problem. From April this year, in all the RTOs (Road Transport Offices) throughout the country, a new software. Known as ‘sarathy parivar’ has been installed for the issue of licence and RC Books.

With this system, all details are available in a central system.

Subsequently, the central government department of Road Transport has decided to issue uniform and the same type of smart card driving licences and RC books throughout the country.

The national symbol and the state government symbols will be available in this. The data will be recorded in a chip embedded in the smart card. The driving licence would contain the details of the driver’s name, date of birth, blood group, indications if organs have been donated, and the link with Aadhar card. The RC book will contain the data of vehicle registration number, engine number Chase number, and the engine technology.

The barcode in the smart card will enable the display all the above details. This would be immensely useful for the police and the traffic department.

This proposed system would be implemented from July next year.

For those who apply for renewal of driving licence and RC books, the new licence would be issued. An additional fee of Rs. 20 to Rs. 30 may be charged. Also, arrangements will be made for those who already have licences and RC Books to change over to the new format.
