It is well known that cyclone Gaja destroyed many parts of Tamil Nadu just recently. The effect of this cyclone was not felt that much in the city of Chennai. The news is after cyclone Gaja the prices of coconuts in the markets have increased. The copra or coconut was previously sold for Rs 9000 a quintal was sold for Rs 9300 a quintal on Wednesday. Coconut is consumed by many people and intake of coconut provides many health benefits. It must be noted that more than 50,000 lakh coconut trees located in places like Thiruvarur, Thanjavur and Pudukottai districts were destroyed in the cyclone Gaja. The important information is the markets across the state of TN would experience shortage of around 100 crore coconuts.
It is important to mention that normally by going around Peruvani in Thanjavur district one might be surprised to see lots of coconut trees but this would not be there anymore. The recent cyclone Gaja was so powerful that it had destroyed thousands of acres of coconut grooves and had uprooted many coconut trees.
The cyclone Gaja has also created huge impact in places such as Aranthangi, Manamelkudi, Jegathapattinam plus in coastal villages of Pudukottai districts. In these places too many coconut trees got uprooted due to the intensity of cyclone Gaja. According to Mr. Masilamani, general secretary of TN coconut farmers association, the damage on the coconut trees would cause low production and it would trigger increase in the prices of coconuts. He added that 45 % of the coconut trees were damaged by the cyclone Gaja. Mr. Masilamani threw light on the importance of coconut trees and its growth and spoke about how it would take atleast 6 to 7 years for a coconut tree to yield fruit. The present scenario would have a lasting impact was also confirmed by him.
