Tamil Nadu Forest department has planned to boost up the groundwater levels of Nanmangalam area’s reserve forest. The forest body will adapt both natural and artificial methods to raise up the ground water levels of the area. Southern suburbs are most of the times exploited by private water tankers extracting large capacity water reserve. This will be stabilized by the forest department with the new development scheme concerned with the second biggest forest land of Chennai.

A special proposal was prepared by the state government to plant back 24 hectares of eucalyptus trees along with the full 320-hectare reserve forest. Nanmangalam’s water reserve is depleted as the result of over-extraction by private demands. Now the revamp of the forest with eucalyptus will retain 90 liters of water every day for each tree in the reserve forest. The tree send its roots for 30 feet underground which will benefit the underwater reserve good for both soil and the dependent forest land in the area.

Forest department has asked the state government to replace eucalyptus trees with as Jamun, Banyan, Mahua and Badam trees. The proposal will soon be finalized said the sources of Forest department. More than 680 species of new trees have been planted after Vardah cyclone 2016.

The plant of retaining water reserve in these lands along with forest conservation will help Pallikaranai Marshland also to hold rainwater effectively aiding for the surrounding ecosystem in the southern parts of the land.

The compound walls are also planned to extend further along Medavakkam Koot road stretch for a 4.5 km distance. The previous walls covers only the stretch of 3.5 km along the Velachery main road.
