Hereafter any corrections in the birth certificate could be done online itself

It is well known that most of the time the name of the newborn is not filled in the application form issued by the hospital after the baby is born. Sometimes the name of the newborn is also spelt incorrectly in the application form. This has been creating many issues for the parents and the child later on. This issue would not be there anymore. Hereafter just by few online click, any correction could be done on the birth as well as death certificate. The GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation is playing its role in updating the existing software to streamline the entire process. By this the middlemen would be eliminated fully. A trial had begun in the Adyar zone now.

Mr. P. Madhusudhan Reddy, who is the deputy commissioner of health, spoke about how according to the procedure the pregnancy should be first registered with the nearest primary health centre. He later added that the hospital would provide an application form once the child is born. This application form is usually filled either by the parents or relatives. Many mistakes like absence of names or misspelt names are observed. He threw light on how every day his office gets several applications for correction. It is important to mention that visiting zonal office is a must for filling up of the application forms and it needs validation by sanitary inspectors.

A daily wage worker wanted to correct his wife’s name present in his son’s birth certificate and he was made to run from one place to another for getting correction done. The worker said that birth certificate proof was needed by his son for his examinations and getting the mistake corrected in the birth certificate was very tough. He then shared his experience of waiting in the zonal office for long time for the mistake to be corrected in the birth certificate of his son. By online process it would be hassle free and it would be superb for many.

The civic body has decided to make the correction in the certificates online as it would prevent the applicants from visiting the office. Avoiding the officials would be possible by this. The important point is there were many complaints regarding corruption and middlemen interfering with the procedure and the step taken by civic body now is appreciated by many.

The deputy commissioner of health later spoke about how the applicants would have to log in to the website and get registered first. Then the applicants could include their names, make spelling corrections, upload their supporting documents etc. He assured that the documents would be validated within a week and SMS would be sent to the applicant regarding the same. All the corrections would be carried out online except the correction about the date of birth.

An official of GCC spoke about how for another 2 weeks errors would be checked by them and how changes would be made to the software. Finally it would be available on the official corporation website. To avail this facility, government e-seva centres could be utilized. The official finally said that the same would be implemented for the death certificates also depending on the success.

A Chennai resident who shifted from the state of Kerala shared his views. He spoke about how he was not aware about getting the pregnancy registered with the nearest primary health centre. He added that he had to make many trips to the zononal office and health centres to get all forms filled when his son was born. He finally expressed his happiness about the online procedure and said many people would be benefitted.
