For Pongal, state government to operate 24700 buses

People going to their native places to be with their family, relatives and friends are very common during the festival times and there would be heavy rush in the buses is known. Soon these people would get huge relief as the state government would operate as many as 24708 special buses ahead of Pongal. This was revealed by the state transport minister, Mr. M.R. Vijayabaskar, on Thursday, 27th December 2018.

Between 11th January and 14th January 2019, 14263 buses would depart from Koyambedu and from other boarding points to be set up at places like Tambaram, Madhavaram, Poonamallee and K.K. Nagar etc. It is known that for the benefit of 4.92 lakh passengers, the state government operated as many as 20000 special buses between 11th and 13 January in the previous year. Strike by the transport workers took place in 2017 and this was responsible for less number of passengers in the buses during the Pongal season.

The minister was hoping that atleast 6 lakh passengers would be travelling to their native places using the special buses during the Pongal season in 2019. On 9th January, one special ticket reservation counters would be opened by the transport department for the public.  The point is in the last year as many as 2.4lakh passengers booked their bus tickets in advance. On 2nd of January there would be discussion to finalise the number of buses that would be operated to facilitate the passengers return trip to Chennai from their native places.

Under the agreement signed with C40 network of cities, the state government would soon operate as many as 10 electric buses. He later assured that the pollution would be brought down in the next four years when 2000 new buses comprising of both electric buses and BS 6 buses would be on the roads in TN.
