Poonamalle High Road is very busy place in the city of Chennai. It has been nearly seven years since the portions of Poonamallee High Road was barricaded for the construction of metro rail. The CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail Limited has begun repair works on this popular road. Restoration of the arterial road for the smooth traffic flow is being carried out.

In another 2 weeks of time, a portion of road in front of Rajah Sir Ramaswamy Mudhaliar Choultry would be back to the original. It must not be forgotten that the outer compound wall of the Ripon Building was razed down for the construction of underground metro station. The information gathered now is the workers would also start building this outer compound wall of the popular Ripon Building. On Thursday, 27th December, workers caught the attention of many when they began breaking the top concrete layer of the PH. High Road in front of the choultry to lay fresh layer of bitumen. An official belonging to CMRL expressed his thoughts and spoke about how the portion of the road was closed when excavating for Central metro was carried out. He then hinted about laying the road in another 2 weeks as the station is nearing completion. Instead of taking diversions, the road traffic would be able to move straight.

It was in the year 2012 the excavation started for the construction of Central Metro and portions of arterial road were barricaded. The traffic was thrown in total chaos when different parts of the road were opened and closed over the years is known. When the motorists came near the Ripon Building from Egmore they were asked to slow down as the road was narrow and shaky. As CMRL closed one of the existing pedestrian subways, a temporary foot over bridge was also installed for the sake of pedestrians. When CMRL first opened central metro in the month of May, the portion in front of the choultry was opened partly. The smooth flow of traffic was not restored in that place.

An official of CMRL revealed about the talks their team had with the corporation engineers. He then spoke positively about the alignment and construction of the compound wall of the Ripon Building and gave assurance that it would be decided in a week. He highlighted that the barricades put up near the Ripon Building would not be removed as CMRL would begin work for Central Square. The tender process is going on and the work for Central Square would soon begin. This was confirmed by him later.

It is important to mention that most of the work for Central Square would be on the road and some portion near Buckingham canal opposite to Central railway station would be excavated. The important point is for the construction of multi-level underground car parking that could accommodate more than 800 cars, excavation would be carried out.  As a part of the project, a 20 storey building with passenger amenities has also been planned.
