From Wednesday (today), it is said that the corporation will go on raid spree heading towards storage points of all the plastic products that have got banned from 1st January 2019. Estimates state that across different locale of the city, there are above 1000 premises where pile up of plastic products are still present. The list of areas where banned plastic product storage in bulk is reported includes T.Nagar, Anna Nagar, Ayanavaram, George Town, Madhavaram, and Perambur.
According to senior officials from the Chennai Corporation, on Tuesday, the raids were not conducted. At the same time, the local level offers at 200 wards were involved in sourcing information about storage of banned plastic products (sourced with the assistance of local traders).
From stockpiles, the Corporation has thus far collected about 1.8 tonnes of banned plastic items. Across all the aforesaid 200 ward offices, such banned plastic products will be collected and shredded to relay roads, officials say. According to civic body advice, the traders are requested to handover all the banned plastic products at 200 ward offices of the Corporation. Once raids are conducted, the Corporation officials would seize plastic products and seal the premises.
Small retail outlets will not be sealed though. We will stop with seizing the plastic items, but the giant premises with large volume of plastics will be sealed, the officials add.
Special teams – across the 15 zones, the corporation is working to spread awareness about plastic ban. A fine of Rs 10,000 will be imposed, they warn. Apart from this, the Trade License will also be cancelled for retailers who make use of banned plastic products.
Speaking about this, D. Karthikeyan, the Corporation Commissioner says they are working with full determination to implement plastic ban. We are also sure not to be erratic.
