How would you react on hearing that a commercial complex would be constructed at the Chennai airport? Surprised isn’t it!!
The fact is Airport Authority of India or AAI would include shopping mall, multiplex and a hotel for the two multi-level car-parking that is being built on either side of the airport metro station for the benefit of many passengers. It is said that the passengers would be able to buy things in the mall plus watch their favourite films in the multiplex and stay at a hotel complex that would be constructed at the airport in Chennai. Approval has been issued by the ministry of environment and forests so that these facilities would be built as a part of 6-level car park project.
In the eastern side of the metro station, the mall and multiplex would be making their presence felt and hotel would be coming up on the western side of the metro station. The point is in the east block there would be as many as 7-levels of parking whereas in the west block there would be 6-levels of parking. A link bridge would be connecting parking lot with its mall and hotel with the terminals. This link bridge would connect to the walkalator tube which runs parallel to the domestic and international terminals. The mall and hotel are mainly for the sake of the passengers but visitors also would be allowed to utilise them.
By having mall, multiplex and hotel, AAI would have the superb advantage of generating more non-aeronautical revenue. An official belonging to AAI spoke about how the space could be used to provide amenities for the passengers while increasing the revenue. It is worthy to mention that the hotel would be of superb help for the transit passengers to have accommodation as the transit rooms in old domestic terminal complex were not available. The building has been pulled down to build an integrated terminal is known. The information collected now is the airport presently sees more than 5000 cars in a day and the multi-level car parking would also be of help after the completion of the integrated terminal. By July 2020, AAI would be completing the work.
