As the registration of pregnancy condition has been mandatory similar to the birth of an infant, the facility to register the pregnancy status has been introduced in the state government E-service centres.

The state government of Tamil Nadu has a welfare scheme to assist the pregnant women for food, etc., offering Rs. 18000. In order to avail this pregnancy assistance and to obtain the birth certificate for the born infant, the pregnant women must inform the details to the government nurses and receive the registration number ‘pickme’ as per the order from the state government department of health.

As the above financial assistance cannot be availed in case of the women taking maternity treatment in private hospitals, most women do not register with the government nurses from the health department in this regard. Subsequently, there are issues and complications encountered to those who have failed o register pregnancy condition when trying to obtain the birth certificate.

Arrangements have been made to register the pregnancy status in the state government primary health centres, government hospitals, and urban health centres. Further, there is an online facility as well to register by visiting the website.

The departmental staff/officials explained: ‘’Pickme’ number is mandatory to obtain birth certificates, ‘Pickme’ numbers can be received by registering with the government nurses or urban health department nurses. The pickme number is mandatory to avail the pregnancy financial assistance.

Those who undergo maternity treatment in private hospitals can receive the ‘Pickme’ number by calling tollfree number 102 or by registering wither in the E-service centre or internet.
