No more wallets or cash or queue.  Those who step into the Chennai metro can easily get their train tickets and board the train straight with ease just using simple tapping of your smartphone, as the Chennai Metro Rail Limited is likely to launch QR-based ticketing. That said, for passengers to purchase tickets via mobile phone is going to be seamless. They can purchase tickets by making the payment, you will have to feed the code on Automatic Fare Collection gate scanner.

For setting up these systems where commuters will have either choices: QR code ticketing as well as paper ticketing, the CMRL has rolled out tenders. This system will be similar to air ticketing which can be simply swiped at AFC gates.

The tender invites states that it is going to be a ticketing system based on QR-code. It is a cashless fare collection method based on QR-reading where ticketing is done online. In this, the ticket is purchased on mobile application through any payment gateway or debit card or wallet or others.

In this new ticketing system, it is not necessary for the commuters to carry their smart cards or take time to stand in the queue for purchasing tickets or get their cards topped up.

According to what the metro officials say, the CMRL mobile app will get the necessary QR code ticketing system updated soon. The AFC gates present at the metro stations shall also have QR code scanners installed.

On one hand, this QR-code system saves a lot of time for the commuters and on the other hand, it is convenient for the CMRL staff members to handle ticketing and cash management at the counters.

There are tenders being rolled out to carry out maintenance of the present automatic fare collection system.
