Efforts taken by civic body for better mobile connectivity in Chennai

The use of mobile phones by the residents of Chennai has been on the rise.  There are few places in Chennai where there is no mobile connectivity and in these places people find it very difficult to communicate with others or get information using their mobile phones. To improve the mobile connectivity, the officials belonging to Chennai Smart City project and the Information Technology department have started exploring the options in places where frequent call drops were reported.

On Thursday, 14th February 2019, a meeting took place and a senior government official who participated in the meeting revealed about how discussions were held to improve the telecom connectivity in the city of Chennai. It must be noted that this was a preliminary meeting. It is well known that there are many dark spots in Chennai city and in these places call drops takes place. 

People find it tough to communicate and connecting to date becomes difficult. The point is private entity had suggested a technology and it would be brought for free. The information collected is this would be a small device piggybacking on the existing poles. It was pointed out by the official that by having tie- up with the Smart City projects in Chennai city its effectiveness would be more.

The important piece of information is the officials belonging to the civic body have pointed out for having better connectivity during those times of disasters. By exploring the options to improve telecommunication during disasters connectivity could be improved well. It was brought out that during the 2015 floods the civic officials could not take up the rescue and relief in many places due to poor telecom connectivity. There were many complaints received by the government agencies and telecom service providers regarding poor telecom connectivity. 

The piece of information gathered is nearly 2800 towers have been erected in the Chennai city and 90% of these towers have been installed on the terrace of the buildings. To address civic issues, corporation has already taken initiatives to promote information technology. Integration of communication technology with existing civic infrastructure would be done by the Smart City projects like control and command centers.
