In a sudden initiative, the state government of Tamil Nadu has raised the bar licence fees in private clubs and star hotels by a higher margin.

Apart from the TASMAC shops functioning under the state government, alcoholic beverages are served in the private clubs and the bars in hotels. However, they need to obtain a licence for this from the state government.

Bar-keepers need to pay an annual fee and renew their licences. This fee has been suddenly raised by the state government of Tamil Nadu.

Accordingly, the people who run bars in the Chennai Metro City, who paid an annual fee of Rs.10 Lakh per year so far, will now have to pay Rs. 12 Lakhs to renew their licences to operate the bars. In other cities, this annual renewal fee has bee increased from Rs. 6 Lakhs to Rs. 8 Lakhs.

Presently, there is a system of paying an annual fee of Rs. 3 Lakhs for 1-star hotels, Rs. 4.50 Lakhs for 2-star hotels, Rs. 6 Lakhs for 3-star hotels, Rs. 9 Lakhs for 4-star hotels, and Rs. 16 Lakhs for 5-star hotels.

Now, the above fees have been revised upwards -  a system of paying an annual fee of Rs. 5 Lakhs for 1-star hotels, Rs. 6 Lakhs for 2-star hotels, Rs. 8 Lakhs for 3-star hotels, Rs. 12 Lakhs for 4-star hotels, and a sensational huge increase to Rs. 20 Lakhs for 5-star hotels.

The above fees will come into effect from 1st April.
