Following the Supreme Court’s order that Italian Ambassador Daniele Mancini cannot leave India, the United Nations has spoken out saying that it hopes that the two countries resolve the issue amicably. Speaking to the press, Deputy Spokesperson for the Un Chief Ban Ki-moon, Eduardo del Buey, said, ‘The Secretary General hopes and expects Italy and India to resolve this matter constructively, and in compliance with their international obligations.’

Two Italian marines Salvatore Girone and Massimiliano Latorre, accused for killing two fishermen off the coast of Kerala, refused to come back to India after they were allowed to go home to Italy to vote in the general elections. This led to the Supreme Court’s order.
