The teaching faculty of Anna University has found it rather difficult to set the question papers for the forthcoming semester examinations. They have been advised to seek help from the temporary teaching staff in this regard.
It may be noted that earlier this year, the Anna University Syndicate, the authority for decision-making, decided not to involve teaching faculty in the examination –related work, mainly citing security reasons.
Anna University has more than 250 employees recruited on a contract basis to handle the subjects of Engineering and Humanities both at the undergraduate and the postgraduate courses. With the teaching staff protesting and demanding regularization of services and he re-designations as Assistant Professors, the university rejected this plea while removing them altogether from the examination—related work with a view to preventing question paper leaks.
Around 37 lower-level temporary staff were fired from services in connection with leaks which were reported I 2017 and 2018. However, with this action of eliminating them from the examination process, the university seems to be headed for a ‘Catch-22’ situation!
Meanwhile, several regular faculties, who were assigned the task of setting question papers (for exams scheduled in April/May 2019) found it rather difficult! In the exact observation by this source, it is mentioned: ‘Some of the regular faculty members couldn’t set question papers for certain courses they didn’t handle. Besides, they were asked to prepare a large number of question papers within a short period of time.’
The university, through an internal communication to staff members, admitted that the heads of department may be facing issues identifying the TFs to set question papers. Hence, the University has asked the HoDs to obtain model question papers from the teaching staff who handled the course along with the assessment question papers and also the last year’s question papers.
