Situated close to the IT corridors in OMR, Perumbakkam is one important residential locality in Chennai. Many crimes have been taking place in Perumbakkam in Chennai these days.
It is brought out that the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board or TNSCB has allotted 2 acres of land for building a police station near the tenements in Perumbakkam for the sake of resident’s safety. It is expected that this police station would be able to curb crimes here. It must be noted that building a new police station would take time and until that the TNSCB has allotted 6 rooms on the ground floor of one of the buildings for temporary purpose.
According to a senior official from the board there has been constant demand for a separate police station for the tenements since the residents feel vulnerable. The important information is more than 12,500 families live in the tenements in Perumbakkam in Chennai. Pallikaranai is atleast 5 km from Perumbakkam and to lodge any complaint the residents of Perumbakkam have to go 5 km to Pallikaranai police station.
A resident belonging to Perumbakkam expressed her thoughts about the safety. She spoke about how in the night time Perumbakkam becomes a place for drinking. She added that many thefts plus murders etc take place Perumbakkam. There are 2 police officers in the booth here but they feel helpless due to the fact that the criminals outnumber them.
The shocking piece of news collected is in 2018 a 17 year old boy was killed here in a gang fight. The point is the suspects who were responsible for the murder were caught by the police. In the last 4 months of time, this was the second murder to take place in the tenements. Another resident expressed spoke about her fear and said it was difficult for the girls to go out after 5pm in the evening.
The important point is Vanessa Peter, policy researcher, Information and Resource Centre for Deprived Urban Communities, urged the authorities to set up a all-women police station here along with a counselling unit. She pointed out about many women in the tenements face domestic or other types of abuse. She added that the department of police must work on strengthening of bond due to mistrust among community and police. Vanessa Peter finally explained about the need to set up vigilant groups, strengthen friends of police initiatives and to have meetings to assess the situation at the tenements.
