The Indian government has no idea about the Indian prisoners held captive in Italian jails. Following the snub to the government by Italy by not allowing their marines face the heat of the Indian law system, the legal experts in India are using this as an opportunity to educate the public about their (the government’s) ignorance.

Indian nationals and people of Indian origin in Italy complain that the Indian embassy there does not take up cases for the community.Studies and investigations are unable to come up with a correct number of prisoners. However, it is estimated that there could be 600 – 700 of them, mostly agricultural labourers from Punjab who have been arrested for illegal entry, theft, murder or violence.
