Modern hi-tech lab for aircraft maintenance inaugurated in IIT Chennai

A laboratory provided with Cold Spray equipment’, for aircraft maintenance with all the latest technology has been inaugurated in IIT Chennai.

 This happens to be the 1st ever instance in the country where an ultra-modern laboratory is being set up in an educational institution!

This lab is being set up jointly by GE India and IIT Chennai. It is gathered that a part of the finance for setting up this lab has been given by the central government. Generally, the technology for restoration of the aircraft engines get damaged due to erosion after a few years is not available currently in India. So, most of the aircraft maintenance work is undertaken with the cooperation of foreign companies.

So, activities had been initiated to change this situation and provide all the latest facilities in India itself. As a part of this effort, a smart laboratory with cold spray equipment has been set up in IIT Chennai. The inauguration event was conducted on Friday (yesterday, 5th April).

The Director of Chennai IIT, Bhaskar Ramamurthy, Professor M. Kamaraj, and the CEO of GE Company, Alok Nandha participated in this event.

The director, Bhaskar Ramamurthy, mentioned that this facility would be a boon for the students in the mechanical and chemical engineering faculties and with this, the aircraft maintenance skill within India will get strengthened.
