The two Italian marines who will face trial for killing two Indian fishermen off the coast of Kerala came back to India on Friday. Massimiliano Lattore and Salvatore Giron landed in New Delhi on an Italian Air Force airplane along with Italy’s Deputy Foreign Minister Staffan de Mustura. The marines will stay at the Italian embassy while Mr. de Mustura meets Indian Minister of External Affairs Salman Khurshid on Saturday.
The marines were sent back to Italy in December to vote in the general elections but did not return. The Italian government refused to send them back, resulting in diplomatic tension between the two countries. Italy finally did the needful after receiving assurances from India about the safety of the marines.
