Following Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s curt and strong letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the officials of the Indian Premier League (IPL) have decided to bench all Sri Lankan players during their matches in Chennai.
Demands from both the AIADMK and the DMK have fallen on ears that are definitely hearing. The IPL had already asked for special security for the Lankan players in the franchise. Following press interviews by both Ms. Jayalalithaa and DMK Chief M. Karunanidhi stating that there will be an uproar in Tamil Nadu if Lankan players play in Chennai, the IPL has decided to let them go for the 10 matches that will be played in the city.
Interestingly, the Hyderabad Sunrisers owned by Sun TV have two Sri Lankan players on the team. Sun TV is owned by Mr. Karunanidhi’s nephew Kalanidhi Maran.
