Many people live in the narrow streets in Chennai and these people are water starved due to lack of water supply. Recently it was said that the waiting time after making the booking for water supply was a fortnight. The latest news is this waiting time has now come down to just a week as metro water has decided to fit 120 trucks with 3000 litres Sintex tanks.
A resident belonging to Adyar explained how he did bookings for every 10 days so that water gets supplied within a week to 10 days of time. He spoke about how the water costs about Rs 400 for a supply of 3000 litres. The point is the cost of 6000 litre tanker is Rs 475 but the waiting period is more than a fortnight. People living in places like Karapakkam and Sholinganallur etc are also opting for the 3000 litre water tankers now.
The information collected is people living in other parts of Chennai having larger demand for water that could be met only with 9000 or 12000 litre water tankers are dependent on the private operators who fleece them or the people have to wait for over a fortnight for the metro water supply.
It should be taken into account that on Monday afternoon the backlogs from 26th May were being cleared at the metro water filling point in Perungudi. Many residents stood in long queue to know about their booking. Every day, 850 metro water tankers do most of their trips to low income places and as a result of this those who book metro water supply by online feel disappointed.
As per a resident belonging to Kodambakkam area, it takes 25 to 30 days to get water supplied to their apartment and now the situation has gone worse. It was mentioned by a Thoraipakkam resident that he booked water tanker on 24th may but got water supply only on 6th June.
The information gathered is some officials of metro water department spoke about how they were working on increasing water supply with more than 6500 trips of water tankers everyday to low income places in Chennai. It was later mentioned by an official that their department would be rolling out online booking of 2000 and 3000 litre water tankers. They would also be increasing the number of such tankers from the current 120 to 200. By this, backlog would be reduced and it would benefit the residents.
