It was in the month of July in the year 2011 Pallikaranai became a part of Chennai Corporation and it is a residential place in south Chennai. Pallikaranai marshland is now making sensational news.
It is now revealed that for removing encroachments from Pallikaranai marshland a new committee would be formed under the supervision of the district collector. Recently, Chennai District Wetland Committee meeting took place and in the meeting the above decision to form a new committee was taken. There was a proposal to form an eviction committee with RDO, Guindy as the head and this was according to a senior forest officer.
It must be noted that in the past eviction committee was formed with Tambaram RDO as the head. The reason for that was at that time the area was under the control of Kancheepuram district forest officer but now the area is under the control of Chennai district forest officer. Hence creation of new eviction committee was decided. Madras HC in the year 2016 had issued orders for the eviction of squatters or those who illegally occupy unused land. The squatters were occupying sizeable portion of this Pallikaranai marshland.
In as many as in 5 areas there were 1250 squatters present and this was identified by the forest officials. It is important to mention here that more than 600 squatters were found in Kamakshi Amman Nagar and then in Kandan Nagar there were more than 300 squatters. Important information collected is in Ambedkar Nagar and in Quaid-e-Millath Nagar total of 225 houses were identified.
In the month of November in the year 2017, the department had issued eviction notices to the squatters is known. The rain played spoilsport and as a result the eviction work was stopped. In the year 2018, new forest division was created with Chennai as its headquarters.
The jurisdiction of the marshland that was previously with the Kancheepuram forest officer had to be transferred to the Chennai district forest officer. One important piece of information is in 2019 when the forest officials began issuing notices the revenue officials could not accompany them as they were involved in some election related work.
