DMK chief M. Karunanidhi has said that his party will not give external support to the ruling Congress party or the Union Government. He reiterated the reason for the withdrawal of the DMK from the Cabinet and said that the news reports that were out on Friday were ‘mischievous’.
Reports on Friday said that the DMK still had ties with the UPA Government. The party withdrew support after the Centre’s ‘indifference and inability’ to support the sentiments of Tamils in the Sri Lankan issue.
Speaking to the media, Mr. Karunanidhi said, ‘Since the developments were not useful for Tamil Eelam, we decided to quit the government as our continuance will be a great injustice to the Tamils… the party`s stand is that whichever government comes to power at the centre has to agree to the demand for an international probe on war crimes against Tamils in Sri Lanka.’
