Six products from Tamil Nadu have been awarded the GI (Geographical Indication) tag. The GI authorities received a spurt of applications and have given the tag to 21 products in all. The products from Tamil Nadu are Madurai Malli (jasmine) , Chettinad Kottan (palm baskets), Pattamadai Pai (mats), Thanjavur Veena, Nachiarkoil Kuthuvilakku (lamp) and Toda Embroidery.
Applications from the south of the country far exceeded the north. Mr. Chinnaraju Naidu, Trademarks and GI assistant registrar said, ‘The mark gives the products a reputation attributable to a place of origin or the area where it is manufactured. With GI certification, a product stands apart and it cannot be manufactured outside of its place of origin or by artisans not from the area.’
