In the year 2018, 1.5 lakh saplings were planted at the Mahindra World City Chennai by Hero-TOI Green Drive and it grabbed the attention of many. The latest news is Chennai city’s green cover would be expanded by the planting of another 1.5 lakh saplings at the premises.
It must be noted that under the initiative of Hero MotoCorp and TOI, Miyawaki technique was used to create dense native forests with plant growth that was 10 times faster than the normal and the plantation that was 30 times denser. This Miyawaki technique was introduced by Japan based botanist named Akira Miyawaki is known. To retain biodiversity, dozens of native species were planted and by this the plantation would become maintenance free after first 3 years.
It is superb to mention that 90 % out of 1.5 lakh saplings that were planted as a part of drive in 2018 are growing well. Audit work was carried out by some scientists belonging to CEMDE or Centre for Environmental Management and Degraded Ecosystems. This is a body under the ministry of environments and forests are known.
It was later mentioned by Mr. Vijay Sethi, head of Corporate Social Responsibility, chief HR officer and chief information officer, Hero MotoCorp, that in 2019 also Chennai people would be taking part in sapling plantation with huge enthusiasm. He hinted that the growing urban forest would improve Chennai city air quality and water table.
Information collected is hero- TOI Green Drive is a 5 year nationwide tree plantation drive. Under this drive as many as 8.9 lakhs trees have been planted in places like Delhi, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh and Indore in association with the urban bodies and forest department there. As a part of the drive, in this 2019, more than 3 lakh trees would be planted across India.
It was later pointed out by some experts that after unbearable summer in TN this Hero-TOI Green Drive supported by Mahindra World City, Chennai is promising. Environmentalist Mr. Arun Krishnamurthy heaped praises about how the companies were showing interest in the subject and channelizing the resources into real time effort.
On 31st August, more than 5000 volunteers that included students, residents and employees of various corporate would come together at Mahindra World City, Chennai to plant saplings.
