Located near the airport in southern Chennai, Pozhichalur is a census town and is a home for famous Agastheeswarar temple. The information that has come out is the residents belonging to Pozhichalur have taken efforts for reclamation of the ponds that have become dump yards there.

It was mentioned by a resident of Pozhichalur that the village has got 10 to 12 small ponds each around half acre in size. She added that many of these ponds have become dump yards now. It must be noted that this resident cleans the pond in the morning time before going to her work. There are as many as 50 people who help her in this cleaning process.

She then shed light on how while cleaning the pond on Wednesday she and others realized that it required more people to clean the pond and how Rs 7000 was spent as rent for excavators and for garbage trucks. The current water crisis issue has made the lives of many residents difficult in Pozhiclalur and due to this the residents realized the need for reclaiming their water bodies.

Point to be taken into account is in the month of February the metro water supply was stopped here and the people have been depending on the water trucks.

According to Mr. C. Vijayashankar, who is also a part of lake cleaning groups in places like Velachery, Porur and Manapakkam etc the situation has become worse in Pozhichalur and immediate action has been  taken. There are just 50 volunteers now and the initiative might not be sustainable.
