The city of Chennai has been getting intermittent rains now and this has made the temperature to go down is known. The news that has come out now is fever and wheezing has become more now and the children are crowding hospitals and clinics to get treated for these issues.

It is revealed that children get affected by many respiratory based diseases and as a result of that they are admitted in the intensive care unit. Point is these respiratory diseases are mostly viral based diseases. The public health experts are indicated by increase in the fever cases that occurs after any seasonal change or onset of monsoon and this is at the Egmore based ICH or Institute of Child Heath.

It was mentioned by the doctors of this ICH that they have been witnessing almost 50% increase in the fever cases. It is important to mention here that doctors at this Egmore hospital usually come across 6 lakhs patients in a year.

As per a senior paediatrician of ICH, Dr. Rema Chandramohan it is clear that many kids with age between 0 and 12 come to ICH with complaints of fever along with symptoms like cough, cold and fatigue. She then hinted about how in some kids bronchitis is very severe and how the kids feel highly uncomfortable. Information collected is there has been a steady rise in the dengue cases and flu but the respiratory disorders caused by rhinovirus or enterovirus makes the children very sick.

In the last 2 months of time, major children’s hospitals in Chennai have reported more than 100 cases of dengue. It must be taken into account that most children’s need simple fluid replacements for symptomatic treatment for couple of days in the hospital ward.

It was later pointed out by Dr. Deepa Hariharan belonging to Soorya Hospitals that bigger problem was the respiratory disorder due to rhinovirus or entero- virus. She added that some of the children become very sick and they require ICU admission plus nebulizers and pumps to make their breathing easy. She shed light on how in the last 2 months 30 children under her care skipped their schools for 15 days. Information collected is after getting discharged from the hospital the children’s had to rest in their homes for more than 10 days.

Apollo Children’s Hospital in Chennai is highly famous and intensivist of this hospital Dr. Suchitra Ranjith explained about how atleast one third of the ICU admissions are due to tropical fevers with multi organ dysfunction. She spoke about how the children first come with fever but soon develop complications like lung and kidney dysfunctions. She explained that the children’s need quick resuscitation and life support like ventilation/dialysis etc.
