There are many expanded areas in Chennai that do not have an underground sewage network. The residents belonging to these expanded areas could feel relieved and happy now.
It is revealed that by the month of March in 2020 metro water board would be adding 50 more sewage disposal lorries to its existing fleet. These lorries would cater specially to the expanded areas in Chennai that doesn’t have a underground sewage network.
The private sewage tankers charge huge amount and has made the lives of the residents of places like OMR corridor difficult. This has led the residents to complain about these private sewage tankers. Point is this latest step by the MWD has come at this crucial point of time and it has caught the attention of many residents along the OMR corridor now.
It must be taken into account that presently metro water charges Rs 650 for disposing one load of sewage and the private tankers charge Rs 800 to Rs 1000. It is brought out that once when the new tankers start functioning then these tankers would deposit the collected sewage in the decanting facility of Sholinganallur, Nesapakkam and Perungudi treatment plants. In these plants, the sewage got from underground system and sludge got by the tankers would be treated.
Information is at present 82 suction and super sucker lorries of MWD also perform the functions of sewage disposal lorries. An official belonging to MWD explained about how there are 367 tankers for collecting sewage from clogged drains and from the manholes. It is worthy to note here that those who previously worked as manual scavengers would be appointed as drivers of the MWD sewage tankers. It is revealed that one member belonging to the families of those who died due to manual scavenging would be hired by the MWD. The information is metro water board has been working on the modalities of the project now.
