Street vendors present on the roads in Chennai city have been making the lives of many difficult is known. It must be taken into account that due to the presence of these street vendors the movement of people, as well as vehicles, get restricted leading to congestion. This won’t be an issue anymore.

The sensational piece of news is as many as 27195 street vendors in the Chennai city would be evicted from the roads where they have their shops spread out. They would be shifted to new vending zones in a few days of time.

It has been revealed by some sources that most of the 15 town vending committees headed by Chennai Corporation executive engineers have sent the list of vending zones in their respective regions to Ripon Buildings. As per a civic official, it is clear that many residential places in the city of Chennai are set to be announced as vending zones in this month of September.

It is worthy to note here that a 15 member vending committee comprises 6 street vendors, one resident, a representative from NGO and civic officials. The demarcation of vending zones has been done without their knowledge and this was as per the residents belonging to many localities.

It was later pointed out by the resident’s welfare associations that they did not have a voice in the demarcation of vending zones. It is said that there would be more civic issues because of this. The resident’s welfare associations have questioned the identification of vending zones based on a simple majority in the town vending committees.

According to Mr. V.S. Jayaraman, T. Nagar resident’s association representative, officials of Chennai Corporation did not inform any residents association about the decision on the demarcation of vending zones. He spoke about how the residents in the ward 136 in T. Nagar are affected by street vendors and encroachments on the footpaths and roads. He explained about how T. Nagar resident’s association was registered with the corporation and how there was no idea regarding who represents the residents in the zone.

Mr. Jayaraman later threw light on how the Corporation officials might have appointed someone who would listen to them. Point is Mr. Jayaraman demanded that the Corporation appoint more residents in its vending committees and each ward would have one resident representative in the committees.

It is brought out that the residents in the areas identified as new vending zones were unhappy as they were not informed about the proposal to declare their roads as vending zones. A resident spoke about how the corporation should conduct public consultation before deciding on the vending zones. A street vendor of vegetables on the Model School Road in Nungambakkam spoke about how the Corporation officials have given her an identity card and how she has been waiting for the allotment of new space for street vending.

The information is the residents in roads such as Khader Nawaz Khan were preventing street vending in their area. This was as per an employee of roadside bunk shop in Nungambakkam.
