Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC has installed e-toilets at 220 places in the Chennai city for public usage is well known. It is now said that these e-toilets are not serving the purpose for which they have been installed.

The shocking information is most of the e-toilets are dysfunctional and untidy. This has been due to the water shortage in Chennai city. This has been brought out by inspection of 5 e-toilets located in busy places in Chennai. These e-toilets are box-like and have an overhead water tank and a sewage disposal system is known. The color-coded signals in these e-toilets indicate whether the toilet is in use and has enough water in the overhead tank.

The information is at the High Court bus terminus the door of the e-toilet has been broken and men urinate on the walls of the toilet. Many liquor bottles were also present all over. The e-toilet at the Nageswara Rao Park in Mylapore presented an ugly sight with toilet being unkempt with night soil on the commode.

It must be taken into account that outside the Egmore court one of the e-toilet doors was left open with no cleaning being done for weeks. Another e-toilet has been used for bathing and cleaning by nearby slum dwellers. All the e-toilets at T, Nagar bus terminus was dysfunctional with bad smell indicating that the public was using it as an open urinal.

An auto driver in T. Nagar mentioned that the installation of e-toilets was a superb idea but the purpose of the installation was not served. One superb piece of information is the e-toilet at Greams Road was in perfect working condition and showing good maintenance.

The Dhaagam Foundation has done huge research on the toilets in Chennai city is known. It was later pointed out by R. Mahalakshmi of this foundation that the e-toilet concept was not suited for Chennai. She commented that many people do not know how to use the e-toilets and how in some places there was no water at all.

According to a senior official belonging to GCC, the water shortage has resulted in the maintenance issues and after continuous monitoring, the situation has been improving. He hinted about the team that has been formed for the proper maintenance of the e-toilets. It was later revealed by some sources belonging to the Corporation that maintenance payments have been pending for the firm   Eram Scientific that is involved in up keeping of the toilets.
