Customers suffer as MRP of drinks ignored

Many reports that retailers are selling drinks at a cost above the maximum retail price (MRP) has seen little or no action from the authorities. The Legal Metrology Department that oversees this is under staffed and unable to cope. Currently, only 3 labour inspectors, 12 deputy inspectors and 33 assistant inspectors are part of the department for the entire city of Chennai.

The complaints received by the Consumer Association of India are mostly for increase in prices of milk, soft drinks and bottled water at tourist destinations, cinema halls, railway and bus stations and airports. ‘The metrology department staff seem to be waiting for complaints to act. Why can`t they conduct periodic inspections?’, says a CAI official. ‘Most consumers end up being fleeced. Even shopping malls and theatres in the city are flouting MRP rules.’
