Around 2400 units of electrical energy are generated by the rooftop solar panels installed in the Chennai Central Railway Station.

It is also noteworthy that the Southern Railways received the commendation certificate given by the IGBC (The Indian Green Building Council) for the excellent implementation of the water recycling system installed in the Southern Railway Zonal Office.

In this scenario, several additional initiatives have been undertaken to implementation of more green projects. In a similar vein, initiatives are taken and being implemented with the objectives:
  • The station premises are also to be kept on the best conditions.
  • Constructing special toilets for differently-abled persons
  • Planting sapling in vacant places in the railway stations including Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore under the control of Southern Railway
  • Installing new LED lamps
In this background, a large quantum of electrical energy is required for:
  • Operating the electric trains from the Chennai Central Railway Station,
  • Offices working in the premises
  • Lifts and escalators
  • The shops within the station complex
  • Fans and lights
In order to reduce such high electrical energy consumption, rooftop solar panels (covering 15148 sq. meters) were installed over the roof of the Chennai Central Railway Station generating 600 kW have been installed. Thus, 2400 units of electrical energy are generated every day which meets the demand for the operations of the Chennai Central Railway Station.

This has enabled a saving of Rs. 10,000 per day! This has helped reduce electrical consumption by 60% while environmental protection is also ensured thereby.

With the successful implementation as above, the southern railway has planned to install rooftop solar panels in all the railway stations under its jurisdiction to meet the demands of electrical energy!
