Railways to introduce privately operated trains on Chennai suburban section

The latest news in railways is, considering introducing privately operated train services on the Chennai suburban section and from Chennai to 6 major cities. It must be noted that these are among the 24 routes that are being considered by the railways now.

A meeting would take place on 27th September and the railway board has invited all top principal chief operations managers to this meeting. The meeting would be held to discuss operational viability and feasibility of routes for the introduction of privately operated trains. A letter was issued by the railway`s board on Monday regarding this.

Information gathered is on the list of 24 routes are Chennai-Delhi, Chennai-Mumbai, Chennai-Bengaluru, Chennai-Madurai, Chennai-Coimbatore and Chennai-Howrah and these routes have got heavy traffic.  

It is worthy to mention that the zonal railways have been asked to identify routes with the potential for introduction of privately operated trains. Once the routes get identified then preparation of tender documents would begin. Providing world-class services to the commuters is the main aim of the union government and this is a part of the 100-day action plan of the union government. Information is bid process would take place and by this private operators would be identified. These private operators would run passenger day or overnight trains connecting important cities in India.

Point to be noted is private operators would be inducting modern passenger trains and they would be operating these trains on paths provided to them on payment of haulage charges. These private operators have the right to charge fares.

There are also other important routes in India like Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Mumbai-Pune, Mumbai-Aurangabad, Mumbai-Madgon, Delhi-Chandigarh/ Amristar, Delhi-Jaipur/Ajmer, Howrah-Puri, Howrah - Patna, Secunderabad-Vijayawada and Ernakulam-Trivandrum etc and these routes would also have privately operated trains. Important piece of information is on Wednesday, 25th September, the railway unions in Chennai have planned a protest in Chennai.
